Pali Workbook
From 10 Day Vipassana Course As Taught By S.N. Goenka

Pali vocabulary from the 10-day vipassana courses as taught by S.N. Goenka.

Publisher’s Preface
This Pali Workbook is an indirect outgrowth of the annual Pali studies program held at the Vipassana Research Institute in Igatpuri, India. Since 1986 small groups of Vipassana students have gathered at VRI each year in October, as the monsoon is ending, to begin a year of study of the P±li language and to give service at the adjoining meditation center, Dhamma Giri.

The Pali passages used by Mr. S. N. Goenka in his evening discourses from the tenday course of Vipassana meditation make a naturally inspiring source of material for study by these students. This workbook is a collection of some of the most familiar
passages from these discourses of Goenkaji. They are naturally also some of the most familiar passages from the Pali Canon, so they should provide the same inspiration for any beginning student of the language used by the Buddha, whether or not they have
had the opportunity to learn the Dhamma from Goenkaji.

The workbook can be used as a simple vocabulary review, helping one to draw inspiration from the teaching of the Buddha by gaining greater familiarity with the meaning of his words. It also has extensive grammatical charts at the back, and the exercises gradually lead a diligent student to use the charts as a way of self-instruction in the grammar of Pali. For a Pali language student these grammatical charts will be valuable reference tools as he or she proceeds beyond this introductory workbook to more demanding textbooks.

One of the most distinctive features of the Pali Workbook is that the vocabulary is defined as it is introduced not only by simple lists of English equivalents, but also by excerpts drawn from Goenkaji’s ten-day discourses. The excerpts serve to place the passage from which the vocabulary is drawn in its rich context of actual practice of the Dhamma. This, after all, is ultimately the purpose of studying the words of the Buddha— to invigorate and guide our practice.

Marla Sutherland

Having lost her way at thirty, Marla abandoned a frenetic, addictive lifestyle to seek a new direction. A chance encounter pointed her toward the East: Nepal – a mountainous kingdom that beckoned with visions of Shangri-La, and India – a vast and exotic land where she experienced ten days of Noble Silence in a Vipassana meditation course that would forever change her life.

Stepping out of an expected life into an unimagined one, Marla traversed the landscape of India and trekked into the Himalayas of Nepal, only to discover it was the inner journey that would illuminate a path to self-knowledge, wisdom and peace.

A fascinating, engaging, and unique memoir, this story covers John Coleman’s life after his cover is blown as a CIA agent in Asia in the late 1950s, leading him to embark on a vigorous pursuit of spiritual truth. In his travels through India, Burma, Japan, and Thailand, he encounters luminous teachers such as Krishnamurti, Maharishi, and D.T. Suzuki. Ultimately, his search for peace of mind and liberating insights comes to fruition in Yangon–also known as Rangoon–under the tutelage of the great Vipassana meditation master Sayagyi U Ba Khin.

Paul R. FLeischman, M.D

These eight essays explore the interface between psychiatry, science, and the timeless teachings of the Buddha. Drawn from the personal experiences of a therapist and practitioner of Vipassana meditation, this work explores meditation’s similarities and differences with psychotherapeutic and scientific endeavors. In the title essay, parallels are drawn between the atomic synthesis of free choice and lawful consequence in Chaos Theory and karma, offering contemporary insights into one of Buddhism’s core concepts. The empirical roots of meditation, its relevance to daily life, and the challenges and benefits of daily practice of Vipassana medi.

Maung Htin Aung

The tales contained in this collection were first told in the dark decade of Burmese history (1876–85) during the coming event of the British conquest. The stories combine exotic background with strong details that offer the Western reader both a picture of Burma in the nineteenth century and an understanding of the basic good sense, gaiety, and gentleness of the Burmese people and the Buddhist clergy. The characters that appear in the book illustrate timeless truths about human nature, which today’s reader can apply to existing people and situations. For the first time since the eleventh century the future of Burmese Buddhism became uncertain, and there was widespread fear, both in Upper Burma still under a Burmese king and in Lower Burma already under British rule, that the final fall of the Burmese kingdom would result in the total extinction of both the national religion and the Burmese way of life. Told with the purpose of allaying this anxiety and fear, these tales give a full and faithful résumé and appraisal of the position of Burmese Buddhism on the eve of the British conquest of 1886.

Composed entirely of texts from the Pali canon, this unique biography presents the oldest authentic record of the Buddha’s life and revolutionary philosophy. The ancient texts are rendered here in a language marked by lucidity and dignity, and a framework of narrators and voices connect the canonical texts. Vivid recollections of his personal attendant Ananda and other disciples bring the reader into the Buddha’s presence, where his example offers profound inspiration and guidance on the path to freedom.

The Essentials Of Buddha Dhamma In Meditative Practice Sayagyi U Ba Khin Anicca, Dukkha, Anatta — Impermanence, suffering and Egolessness

The Essentials Of Buddha Dhamma In Meditative Practice

Sayagyi U Ba Khin

Anicca, Dukkha, Anatta — Impermanence, suffering and Egolessness — are the three essential characteristics of things in the Teaching of the Buddha. If you know Anicca correctly, you will know Dukkha as its corollary and Anatta as ultimate truth. It takes time to understand the three together.

Impermanence (anicca) is, of course, the essential fact which must be first experienced and understood by practice. Mere book-knowledge of the Buddha-Dhamma will not be enough for the correct understanding of Anicca because the experiential aspect will be missing. It is only through experiential understanding of the nature of Anicca as an ever-changing process within you that you can understand Anicca in the way the Buddha would like you to understand it. As in the days of the Buddha, so too now, this understanding of Anicca can be developed by persons who have no book-knowledge whatsoever of Buddhism.

To understand Impermanence (anicca) one must follow strictly and diligently the Eightfold Noble Path, which is divided into the three groups of Sila, Samadhi and Pañña — Morality, Concentration and Wisdom. Sila, or virtuous living, is the basis for Samadhi, control of the mind leading to one-pointedness. It is only when Samadhi is good that one can develop Pañña. Therefore, Sila and Samadhi are the prerequisites for Pañña. By Pañña is meant the understanding of Anicca, Dukkha and Anatta through the practice of Vipassana, i.e., insight meditation.
