10 Day Vipassana Course – Day 1 (English)
In the 10-day courses taught by S.N. Goenka (“Goenkaji”) in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin, there are evening discourses by Goenkaji which present a step-by-step guide to the underlying principles of Vipassana Meditation. These discourses are essential for a student’s understanding of the technique.
During a course, the daily discourses by Goenkaji help students understand the connection between the underlying theory of Vipassana Meditation and the practical application of the practice of the technique of self-observation. This is very helpful in establishing a daily practice and thereby receiving its benefits. This combination of presenting the theoretical and the practical has been successful over many years in bringing the practice of Vipassana Meditation to millions of people around the world.
When an Old Student completes a course, he or she is encouraged to establish a daily Vipassana Meditation practice by sitting every morning and evening. Questions may arise about what Goenkaji taught during the course regarding certain theoretical aspects of the practice connected with what they are experiencing in their sittings. Many students worldwide do not have access to facilities to review Goenkaji’s discourses to refresh and guide them in the theoretical aspects of their continued practice.
